UIC Dr. Samuel Dorevitch to serve as Fulbright Specialist in Kathmandu, Nepal, this summer

Dr. Samuel Dorevitch, Professor of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences in the UIC School of Public Health, will serve as a Fulbright Specialist in Kathmandu, Nepal, this summer (tentatively planned for July 2024) .

The Fulbright Specialist Program supports Nepali institutions through grants to bring U.S. Specialists in selected disciplines to Nepal for two to six weeks. Past Specialists have supported host institutions by conducting activities such as trainings and professional development, short-term lecturing, seminars, special conferences or workshops, teacher training, collaborating on curriculum planning, institutional and/or faculty development.

Dr. Dorevitch’s primary research interest is the link between water quality and health. Since 2017, he has conducted research in rural areas of Kenya that evaluated point-of-use water treatment. Since then, his research has aimed to improve water quality and health at the community-scale.

His research in Kenya was broadened to also address chronic kidney disease, heavy metals in water, as well as COVID surveillance through wastewater monitoring. His innovative interdisciplinary research in Kenya has brought advanced University of Illinois solar powered technology to Kenya, where it is used by communities to produce safe drinking water.
