The Office of Global Engagement and the Study Abroad Office are proud to announce that 12 UIC students have been selected for the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to study abroad this summer and fall semester.

The Gilman Scholarship is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The program supports students who have been historically underrepresented in education abroad, including first-generation college students and ethnic minority students. The Gilman Scholarship aims to make study abroad accessible to a more diverse population of students and gives students the opportunity to gain knowledge of and experience with other cultures, countries, languages and economies.

The Gilman International Scholarship is one of the most important education abroad scholarships in the nation as it is earmarked for Pell-eligible students and preferences students who have traditionally been underrepresented in education abroad. UIC students are extremely competitive for this scholarship, and we are thrilled to have 12 recipients for the March 2023 cycle. We hope our campus community will encourage other students to apply for this scholarship in the future as we work to become a top-producing institution of Gilman scholars.

Study abroad is a special experience for every student who participates. Living and learning in a vastly different environment of another nation not only exposes our students to alternate views, but also adds an enriching social and cultural experience. It also provides our students with the opportunity to return home with a deeper understanding of their place in the world, encouraging them to be a contributor, rather than a spectator in the international community.
