UIC Expands Global Footprint Through Study Abroad Courses and International Collaboration

The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) continues to expand its global impact through dynamic partnerships, transformative study abroad programs, and meaningful international collaboration—initiatives supported by the Office of Global Engagement (OGE).

This summer, UIC students participated in faculty-directed study abroad programs, gaining hands-on academic and cultural experiences in Ireland, Mexico City, and Costa Rica.

Nursing Students Explore Healthcare Abroad

In a groundbreaking step for global health education, the UIC College of Nursing launched its inaugural study abroad program in Ireland. Students traveled to Dublin and Galway, where they visited hospitals, met with Irish healthcare professionals, and compared health systems across cultures. As part of their learning, students reflected on differences in public health priorities and gained a broader understanding of global nursing practices.

Learning Language Through Art in Mexico City

UIC students immersed themselves in Revolutionary Art and Language in Mexico City—a four-week study abroad program created in collaboration with CEPE UNAM (Centro de Enseñanza para Extranjeros, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México). Blending Spanish language instruction with explorations of Mexican muralism, history, and contemporary issues, students visited iconic cultural sites while earning 6–7 credit hours. The program is tailored to beginner and intermediate Spanish learners, offering a powerful mix of classroom learning and cultural engagement.

Longevity and Global Collaboration in Costa Rica

Through discussions with health professionals, researchers, and local communities, students examined the role of lifestyle, diet, and public health in healthy aging.
