How do I obtain comprehensive medical insurance for traveling internationally?
If you are an employee traveling on UIC-business, you are encouraged to enroll in the Gallagher insurance through the ITS enrollment portal. The cost will be covered for UIC-related travel.
If you are not traveling on UIC-business or have a non-UIC employee traveling with you while on UIC-business, you can also obtain comprehensive medical through the Gallagher company which has a personal travel product available. Please visit gallagherstudent.com for more information.

I'm traveling abroad and part of the time I will be visiting with family. Do I need to enroll in travel insurance and am I covered for those days?
Yes, you do need to enroll in travel insurance and you will be covered for those days.

Does the Gallagher insurance cover flight cancellations and interruptions/lost luggage/car insurance?
No, this insurance does not cover flight cancellations, lost luggage, or car insurance. If you wish to obtain these, check with your air carrier or credit card company.

I'm receiving distinguished international visitors to my unit. What should I do?
Please notify the Director of International Affairs and Outreach by filling out the distinguished international visitors form. The Director will determine the type of support that the Office of Global Engagement can provide.

I'm interested in UIC developing a new relationship with a foreign university or other entity outside the US. What steps should I take??
First, reach out to the Director of International Affairs and Outreach by email for a consultation before making any concrete plans for an agreement. Some activities may not require an agreement or may require use of a template approved by University of Illinois’ General Counsel.
Second, review the International Collaborations Policy to be certain what you are considering adheres to university policy.
Third, submit the application for a new international agreement.

I'm interested in developing an international contract program with an international university. How do I do that?
Please consult UIC’s Programs for International Partnerships for more information about the various options for degree (e.g., 3+1+1) and non-degree programs.

What's the difference between UIC Global and UIC's Office of Global Engagement? I’ve heard about UIC Global—what is its relationship to UIC?
The Office of Global Engagement includes all international education offices at UIC and it supports units striving to expand UIC’s Global Engagement.UIC Global is a partnership between UIC and Shorelight Education to recruit and admit qualified undergraduate and graduate students and provide support and language services to enable them to be successful with the ultimate goal of full matriculation in degree-seeking UIC programs.

I'm interested in creating a study abroad program for students. How do I start?
In 2020 UIC adopted a campus-wide policy requiring all ongoing academic programs abroad to undergo a safety and security review before being offered to students. In addition, existing programs will undergo periodic reviews of their safety and security. For information on the policy and related procedures please visit our Study Abroad information page.

What resources are there for an international student in my class who is struggling with language or cultural challenges?
The Office of International Services is your partner is coordinating support for international students at UIC. They can help identify resources and discuss options within the context of immigration status.
The Tutorium in Intensive English provides supplemental language classes, tutoring, and editing services for English language learners.

What resources are there for finding housing, issues with housing, and adjusting to life at UIC/in Chicago?
The Office of International Services supports international students through all aspects of life as a student at UIC and are always a good first point of contact.
Campus Housing provides a variety of long and short term housing options on-campus, including the International Perspectives LLC. Commuter and Off-Campus Life maintains an off-campus housing listing and is available to advise students through the process of securing an apartment. Student Legal Services can assist current students with legal issues pertaining to rental and landlord agreements.

What resources are there for students who need editing services for their dissertation, research papers, etc.?
The Writing Center provides individual writing support for current UIC students. If the student is not familiar with the Writing Center, it can be helpful to remind them that the service is free and show them how to get connected.
The Tutorium in Intensive English provides one-on-one tutoring and editing services by teachers who specialize in teaching English to speakers of other languages.

What can I do to ensure that I'm an effective teacher with international students?
The Office of the Vice Provost for Diversity and Office of Global Engagement offers a regular faculty workshop on supporting International Students as part of their “Inclusive Classroom” Initiative.
There is also information and classes to support international teaching assistants through the International Teaching Assistant Program.
